Rubio’s Commitment to Serving Responsibly Sourced Seafood

You’ve probably heard the term “responsibly sourced” and “certified sustainable” linked to seafood before, but what does it really mean?

All sustainable seafood is responsibly sourced. Sustainable seafood is certified and comes from responsibly managed fisheries that maintain fish populations and ecosystems without harming the environment. They minimize the bycatch (unwanted fish and other sea animals like sea turtles) and interactions with protected species and conserve essential fish habitats. This approach keeps habitats and fish populations healthy and thriving. When you eat sustainable seafood, you are choosing to protect our oceans for generations to come!

In alignment with our dedication to protecting our oceans, Rubio’s is committed to working with suppliers that serve responsibly sourced or certified sustainable seafood. Sounds like a win, win, right?

When you enjoy our flavorful wild-caught Alaska Pollock or wild-caught Alaska Coho Salmon, you can rest assured that they are certified as sustainable by the FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management. In fact, all seafood caught in Alaska is sustainable because it was written into the Alaska state constitution when they became a state in 1959 to protect the environment. Our pan-seared shrimp is also sourced from fisheries certified as sustainable by Best Aquaculture Practices.

What about our wild-caught Mahi Mahi? Even though it isn’t yet certified sustainable, it is still responsibly sourced, which means that it utilizes many of the same practices as certified sustainable fisheries, but isn’t yet certified. Our Mahi Mahi comes from fisheries in progress that are utilizing responsible fishing practices and working towards their certification.

At Rubio’s, we look forward to continuing to do our part in preserving our oceans and serving flavorful, coastal-inspired seafood.
