At Rubio's we strive to offer seafood that is certified sustainable or from responsibly managed fisheries that maintain healthy populations and ecosystems. Currently, a majority of our seafood meets this goal, including our genuine Wild Alaska Pollock, Regal Springs® Tilapia, Atlantic Salmon and Shrimp.

What Does Sustainable Seafood Mean?

Sustainable seafood is fished or farmed using practices that maintain seafood populations without harming the environment.

A Majority of our Seafood is Certified Sustainable

A majority of our seafood comes from fisheries that are certified or farmed in accordance with Best Aqua-culture Practices (BAP). Our Alaskan Pollock fisheries are certified by the FAO-Based Responsible Fishery Management (RFM) Certification. This certification shows that Alaska’s fisheries meet the criteria of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. These third party certifications are awarded to fisheries or farms that meet sustainable seafood standards for maintaining healthy populations and ecosystems, and for seafood traceability. See below for more details on the BAP and RFM.

Why Purchase Sustainable Seafood?

Why does purchasing sustainable seafood matter? By choosing seafood that is fished or farmed in ways that don't harm the environment, you help preserve ocean species and ensure a healthy ocean for future generations.

You Can Make a Difference

Your seafood choices have the power to make a difference. Support sustainable practices by being aware of where the fish you purchase comes from and how it was caught or raised, and choose fish that is sustainable when you can.

Certification Standards

FAO-Based Responsible Fishery Management Certification

Alaska takes marine conservation seriously. Alaska is the only state with a constitutional mandate for sustainability. Alaska now participates in the FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification program. This certification shows that Alaska’s fisheries meet the criteria of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the most comprehensive and respected fisheries management guidelines in the world.

Global Aquaculture Alliance

The Global Aquaculture Alliance is a worldwide third-party certification organization with a set of certification standards - the Best Aquaculture Practices - for hatcheries, farms, processing facilities and feed mills. These standards were developed to protect and monitor environmental impact, food safety and traceability. In adopting these standards, the seafood industry can better meet the demands of the growing global market for wholesome seafood produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
