Alaska takes marine conservation seriously. Alaska is the only state with a constitutional mandate for sustainability. Alaska now participates in the FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification program. This certification shows that Alaska's fisheries meet the criteria of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the most comprehensive and respected fisheries management guidelines in the world.
The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards address environmental and social responsibility, animal welfare, food safety and traceability in a voluntary certification program for aquaculture facilities. BAP certification defines the most important elements of responsible aquaculture and provides quantitative guidelines by which to evaluate adherence to those practices.
The Global Aquaculture Alliance is a worldwide third-party certification organization with a set of certification standards - the Best Aquaculture Practices - for hatcheries, farms, processing facilities and feed mills. These standards were developed to protect and monitor environmental impact, food safety and traceability. In adopting these standards, the seafood industry can better meet the demands of the growing global market for wholesome seafood produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
While our Alaska Pollock, Atlantic Salmon, Shrimp, and Tilapia are sustainable, there are certain fish – like Mahi Mahi – where sustainable isn't possible yet. Hopefully that changes. Mostly for the sake of the Mahi Mahi, whom we love.
At Rubio’s, you’ll see both wild-caught and farm-raised seafood on our menu.
This is for a good reason: catching everything in the wild would deplete the very resource to which we owe everything.
So we source farm-raised seafood raised in clean waters, free of growth hormones and harmful levels of toxins. This helps Rubio’s keep the world’s oceans full and healthy while continuing to serve a variety of seafood to our guests.
And because we’re committed to sourcing from only the highest quality fisheries, the result is a
win-win-win: you can enjoy delicious tilapia, salmon and shrimp in our dishes, support environmentally and socially responsible fishing practices, and help keep our oceans thriving for years to come.
